Project 1 Recap

I enjoyed the process for the Gestalt part of the project. It was good practice to continue to develop ideas until I got past the cliché, basic ideas and could start to become more creative with them. It was also really helpful to have feedback from the class throughout the project. Seeing how others approached the project, encouraged me to be more creative and push the designs further. It surprised me the more I worked with the designs how much I could do with just six circles in a box. After working on it for awhile, my designs began to become almost too complicated, creating more of a sense of chaos then of unity. I found that when this happened, it was helpful to look back at my original designs to remember the effectiveness of a strong, simple design. It was good to have a combination of designs both done by hand and in graphic so that I could get a feel for the advantages and disadvantages of different media.

The Principles of Design aspect of the project helped me to have a better understanding of line, shape, and value. I enjoyed looking back through my camera roll to find pictures that fit the requirements. However, I wish I would have pushed myself further to take new pictures by exploring the world around me. I feel like this would have forced me to see the world in a new artistic light and become more creative. I also feel like I could have been more thoughtful in looking at the project holistically by having all of the pictures work together as one cohesive project. I may have been able to do this by choosing pictures with similar color schemes.

Overall, I enjoyed the project. The process of working out designs and experimenting was helpful for me to recognize good designs not only in artwork, but in the basic elements of the world around me.
