Project 2 Recap

JMJ

Unity and variety work well together in creating an interesting but balanced composition. If there is too much variety then the piece can become too chaotic and just feels like noise. Unity can guard against this chaos by guiding the viewer through the piece. For example the Gestalt principle of repetition of circles and curves unifies the ink design (below); whereas the variety of sizes of circles and the gradients in the design keep it visually interesting.

The use of unity and variety can apply to any other media such as drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Whether you are painting a landscape, drawing a portrait, or sculpting something, the composition of the piece will be an important thing to consider. It helps if the artist guides the viewer through the composition of the artwork by using Gestalt principles such as continuity, grouping, and repetition to unify the piece. However, they can also use variety in the composition to keep the piece visually interesting.
