Project 3.2 Material Studies

coffee grounds

For this material study I used coffee grounds. I pinched small amounts of coffee grounds and carefully sprinkled it onto the white plate to fill in the negative space in order to create the image of a tea cup. The action of sprinkling the coffee grounds carries with it some notion of motion. The coffee grounds have connotation with early mornings. I could choose to create different images, that are less static. Or maybe even a series of plates with images that would change creating the illusion of motion.

coffee & pen

For this material study I used coffee to paint the main gesture of the image. After letting it dry, I used the micron pens to define the lines on Tigger’s face. Then added more coffee to the parts of the face that were darker. Space can be created with this method by creating layers. The scent of coffee creates a sense of nostalgia for me, reminding me of home and my big brother sitting in front of the furnace in the living room drinking coffee from our Tigger mug.

cut-up tea packet

For this material study, I cut-up a tea packet into a variety of shapes then arranged it into a composition. The actions of cutting, folding, and balancing have connotations of motion. I liked that I could still faintly smell the scent of the rose tea on the paper. This could maybe tie in with the idea of nostalgia tied to scents or to the imagery of a morning rosary.

For this material study, I folded a paper in half, then cut lines of different lengths along the folded edge. I did this again along different folds. Then, I moved the cut lines to the other side. After this, I folded together two pieces of paper to create a spring-like object and balanced it on the 3D form. The illusion of space is created by scale shift. There is also the illusion of motion caused by repetition and capturing anticipation. The action of cutting and folding are also ways this material study can have connotations of motion.

At this point in the project, these materials lend to the idea of mornings and breakfast especially the coffee grounds, coffee “paint,” and tea bag. I would like to expand on the idea of having nostalgia from childhood images, particularly how the sense of smell brings back memories.
