Found Action: Work In Progress

JMJ

I’ve decided that I would like to completely rethink this project. Now, I think I would like to work on pulling together characters and scenes from some of my favorite books from my childhood. I thought it might be good to make a collage of the various illustrations in the bedtime stories to create the image of my sister reading a bedtime story to my niece.

I will redraw bits and pieces of some of those stories and use gouache to bring in some color. I will also use bits of plain colored paper to fill in some of the collage. The paper will be significant because it will be representative of the pages which made up the children’s books. I can also incorporate old family photos into the project as well. For the digital aspect, I will probably create “cartoony” versions of some of the photos to put into the collage.

The process of looking through old stories and pulling them together has been both fun and nostalgic of my childhood. The space where I am working–my home–is important because it is where all of these childhood memories originated. The act of collecting all of these images together to create the image of my sister and niece is intended to show the passing of stories from generation to generation.

For now, I have loosely drawn the picture of my sister reading a story to my niece onto a 24” x 32” poster board. I am a little concerned that I have cut out for myself a little too much work for this composition. Oh well:) I have also drawn, painted, and cut out several drawings of characters and scenes from some of my favorite childhood books to use to collage onto it.

While the first composition is looking forward to future generations, I would like to look back to past generations for the second composition. For this one, I would like to create a different collage with rubbings from the walls of my home which hold so many memories for my family from even before I was born. Similarly to the first collage, I would digitally render some old photos to include in it. Because the ideation for these compositions is entirely new, I have not gotten a solid start on the second composition yet.
