Project 4: Work in Progress

Going to the cemetery, I saw these acorns on the ground and wanted to get pictures of them with the oak behind them. I find it striking that these little acorns have the means to become as great as the oak which they came from. I liked the idea of giving these little acorns a life of their own and space to explore the world around them. These are the pictures I took…

Here is my ideation process…

Here is the series of frames which tell the story of these acorns (not entirely in order)

I would like to create the narrative of two acorns who go on an adventure. The first page will be of two simple acorns sitting on the ground. However, on the next page, the acorns come to life as cartoon characters who go on a simple picnic and enjoy the small joys in life.

Each page has a small section of the base of an oak in the background, foreshadowing the greatness to which these humble acorns are called. Unaware of the great, tall oaks surrounding them, let alone that they will one day be share in its glory, the two nameless acorns just go about their day. However, towards the end we see the two acorns admiring the view of the tall oak tree. On the next page, we see just two acorns laying on the ground at the base of an oak tree. And on the last page, there are two shoots coming forth from the ground. Directional lines point towards a great oak tree.

I plan to format this project as a “silent short film.” I will make a small book of the series of frames and use watercolor to add color.

Many of my pictures are based off of acorns which fell to the ground. These positions, therefore incorporate an element of chance. Also, as these characters are based off of imagination an element of intuition is also necessary.
